“Hi, my name’s Alan O. I’m Chinese-American, I was born in Dallas, Texas. I’m just working here on the big island for a week. I’m originally from, I grew up in San Diego. and went to the university of UCSD, lived all over the place. I went to Canada, I lived in Canada and Montreal for med school. I came to Hawaii for residency and been practicing all over the islands ever since. So basically, I’m a doctor who travels. I fill in for other docs and just kind of like a Generation X doctor, I guess. Not exactly sure what I want to do in the end. I do a little research on the side, too. Sometimes I go off to Micronesia, and my old boss, like, sends me down there to work on population health stuff, you know. But other than that, I live in Hawaii, you know, like to go hiking. You know, hopefully someday, you know, I’ll put my degree to good use and just work for the, work for the health of the entire population, you know. Who knows. That’s what I do. I guess that’s it. (Background voice: You still have three minutes.) Three minutes? Oh man! Alright, well, what else do I do? Well, okay, well, I should talk about my hobbies, you know. I collect coins, you know. I collect stamps from countries that don’t exist anymore, you know, some countries, like, Hawaii, you know, confederate states, you know. I like to hike. I’m going to go hiking to the, hopefully to the lava fields today, Volcanoes National Park. I like Hawaii, it’s pretty diverse, you know. Everybody gets along. Hardly any racism here, not like I’ve seen on the mainland. It’s nice to be out here. I think I’ll probably stay here, you know, but I don’t know, we’ll see. And, uh, what else? I don’t know, I think someday I might go get another degree in public health, and, you know, maybe work on some health policy, but for now, I’m just cruising, and that’s my life, I guess.”
