My name is Erwena Rebecca S. I like to go by Rebecca now that I’m an adult, so. I used to be called Weenie when I was a child and one day when I was about 10 I went out on my porch and I announced to my friends that I no longer wanted to be Weenie, I wanted to be Stonie. That was my father’s nick name. Well, it still is. And I thought it was a grown up kind of mature- It was better than Weenie, I know that. And now that I’m older, I like to be called, Rebecca. I guess basically I never really like Erwena. That’s my mother. She loves Erwena. She calls my name all the time…I don’t know. I came down to see what was happening and I guess just to talk. I- I’m a school teacher. I like to write poetry. I have one of my poems here. I enjoy writing haikus. Especially- I have this chapter here I wrote. It’s called “Winters Layer Five”, and as I was saying before, even though it’s about winter I did write it in a very warm climate. I was in Puerto Rico with my girlfriend Joanna foe 2 weeks and I sat on the beach and wrote. I basically write when I’m on vacation or away from my home. I don’t know why, but I’d like to read just one, Indigo. It says, “My people came far, bringing color to a new world with god’s blessing. That’s one of my favorites. I figure since it’s black history month…talk about my people. Talk about my family. My mother told me a couple moths ago that we were related to President Tyler. So, I looked him up and he was a part of Richmond, Virginia. That’s were my people are from. Richmond. We’re African Americans but my grandmother said we are Chickahaminy, Native Americans and she never related too much to the African aspect of her life but she knew that she was African American. She passed away a couple years ago on December 5th and I miss her a lot. I just took over her house. It’s a big house. It has a lot of problems right now but, uh, we’re getting it together. I’m engaged to be married. My fiancés waiting for me now. He’s probably wondering what I’m doing. I came to return a cook book because I’m in a cultural club in my church called Kookatana (?). We just did our annual 2 day festival. And I was really surprised because out of this huge library there’s only one African cookbook. I think I better buy a couple at a flea market or something and donate them because I couldn’t believe there’s only one. I could only find one. And I kept it for a month so I owe the library lots of money for my return fees. Oh, I have a daughter, Adrian, she’s 19. I just got finished talking to her and she asked me if I borrowed her Madonna tape that’s very very old. But it’s the one with material girl and I like to listen to it. I know it’s corny, its jive but I like to listen to it when I’m walking. I told her I didn’t have it, but I do have it somewhere. She said, “I wasn’t it back.” What does she need it for? Her boyfriend’s a rapper. So, I think- I don’t really think she’s listening to Madonna right now. And that’s about it. I write children stories also. I’m trying to publish 1 story. My character is Matt, so I hope it happens and that’s it.
