I guess I’ve been doing this for about fifteen years or a lot. I learned it all from a woman I met on the mainland, came over here together. She had all the knowledge of the textiles and the printing, and I actually came from, I graduated from UH with a degree in ceramics. This pink would show it off best, especially a nice pink and black. This is a turtle design, sort of one aspect of the design elements and the shell there and a sort of a, kind of another on the other side. I guess the way I’ve been doing it lately is sort of the idea of printing the t-shirts is to do one design for one side and one on the other and sort of to have them somehow reflect each other. It’s whether it’s the people or it’s the idea of the person and then the function on the back. Here and at least most of the paddlers, you see them with ____ figures with their paddles over their head or something like that, which seems to me everybody just reproduces that design, so I’ve sort of tried to come up with a design that gave the idea of having the power of a paddler and to paddle in the sense of having that kind of power that it takes to do that. So, I just decided to put the hand over the head and grasping the paddle like that, but then at the same time I came, I wanted to have the idea of doing a poi pounder with the pounder and the corm in the bowl and a leaf and everything all together sort of in the sense of what poi is, all mashed up into. Initially, of course, I do them as the concept. Initial drawings I do paper, and that’s actually what I love to do is just to do the drawings and then taking it to screen. It usually takes for me about a week to hand cut screen and to make the frame myself and then stretch it and cut out the design and the lachrafilm because I do a hand cut screen. Boxes and boxes full of drawings never make it to screen because it does take time, but I never really put enough time into figuring out what to do with all these little elements, like even making cards or something there. You know, a lot of things that I haven’t done with designs, which I could have done if I had been a higher energy level person, then it would change the whole aspect to also, to get bigger unless I went into a really heavy duty production mode, and I don’t want to do that. I’d say, I’ll probably just remain pretty much a subsistent existence at this level.
